Since 1975, ARCON has been actively involved in communications technology ranging from signal compression and packet-switched voice communications to secure digital voice communications. We direct a significant portion of our research toward the future of this market technology. As a result, ARCON enjoys a position on the forefront of secure communications technology which is playing an increasingly significant role in voice communications.
ARCON is involved in the following activities:
ARCON is developing a "Voice with Data" conferencing system. The system is a logical follow-on to the "Multi-Speaker Secure Narrowband Conferencing System" developed by ARCON. Furthermore, we are conducting an extensive evaluation of 2400 bit/second digital voice coders to select a new Federal standard for secure digital voice at this bit rate.
ARCON has developed techniques and procedures to use data of audio recordings and noise characterization from multiple platforms to simulate the acoustic noise environments of these platforms within an isolation chamber. Human subjects, hired and trained by ARCON, are placed within the acoustic simulation and use microphone systems resident to that particular platform to either generate recorded speech material for input to candidate speech coders or use the coders interactively; performing dynamic, two-way, communicability evaluations.
ARCON's Speech Group maintains a large library of both acoustic noise environment recordings and speech input material. Some of the data include stereo Digital Audio Tape (DAT) recordings, weighted and non-weighted Sound Pressure Level (SPL) measurements, continuous hardcopy SPL recordings, and In-field talker recordings using resident microphones.
