Communicability Testing for Voice Coders ABSTRACT The current generation of vocoder speech quality tests are predominately listen-only. However, this is not how most communication devices are used operationally. Communicability test methods have been devised to provide a controlled, realistic approach to vocoder testing. They have produced mixed results. This paper describes communicability testing and a new approach to communicability testing for voice processors which was used in the selection of the FS for low-rate vocoders. The methodology, the ARCON Communicability Exercise (ACE-95), incorporates a computer administered, cooperative task providing both free and structured communications using real-time systems while allowing collection of both subjective and objective system measurements. |
